Tradition states that in 1650 a survey party, headed by Rowland Thomas
and Elizur Holyoke each ascended the two mountains on their lines of
survey and named them Mt. Tom; for Rowland Thomas and Mt. Holyoke for; Elizur
Holyoke.
The top of Mount Tom was owned by Roswell Fairchild who bought it to
harvest timber for his Westfield Paper Mill. He later sold it to
W.S. Loomis, President of the Holyoke Street Railway.
